"The Kee OF Life is How You Play it"
Founded in 1993 by the visionary Lenny McLean, ON KEE has established a remarkable and consistent presence in the realm of refined live jazz entertainment. The genesis of this esteemed ensemble can be traced back to performances alongside the nationally recognized recording act ‘Classic Example,’ a group skillfully produced by the renowned Maurice Starr. It was through this initial collaboration that the musicians discovered a profound shared passion for the intricate art of jazz and the compelling expression of original compositions. This pivotal realization propelled them into the vibrant and dynamic jazz community of Boston, Massachusetts.
Within Boston's thriving musical landscape, ON KEE cultivated a dedicated and enthusiastic following. Their reputation flourished through engaging collaborations with a multitude of accomplished and respected musicians, each adding their unique voice and talent to the collective sound. The band became a fixture at several historical and significant venues that defined Boston's jazz scene during that era. Frequent performances graced the stages of Connolly's Jazz Club in the Roxbury neighborhood, a space known for its intimate atmosphere and commitment to authentic jazz. Similarly, the 1359 Jazz Club in Cambridge provided another vital platform for ON KEE to hone their craft and connect with their growing audience. These early residencies were instrumental in shaping the band's identity and solidifying their commitment to their musical vision.
With a repertoire carefully curated to feature both timeless jazz standards and compelling original works, ON KEE steadily expanded their reach and performance circuit. They became regular performers at the esteemed Ryles Jazz Club in Cambridge, a venue with a long and storied history of hosting top-tier jazz artists. Furthermore, their performances extended to G Clef in Providence, Rhode Island, a notable location that attracted both nationally touring and prominent regional artists. The year 1996 marked significant milestones for the ensemble, including the distinct honor of serving as the opening act for nationally acclaimed recording artists Jeff Lorber and Bob James at G Clef. This exposure to a wider audience further elevated their profile within the jazz community. In 1997, ON KEE's musical talents were showcased at the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Convention held in Boston, demonstrating their versatility and appeal to diverse audiences.
Beyond their commitment to musical excellence, ON KEE consistently demonstrate a deep-seated dedication to community engagement. For four impactful years, they generously contributed their time and talents to the Special Olympics held at Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts. This heartfelt practice continued until Lenny McLean's eventual relocation to Maryland, underscoring the band's commitment to giving back to the community. ON KEE's distinguished performance history also includes a notable benefit concert held at the iconic House of Blues in Cambridge, raising funds for the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans. In 1998, they participated in the prestigious ‘Steppin Out Gala,’ a significant fundraising event dedicated to supporting the vital work of the Dimock Community Health Center and several Fundraisers for the Lupus Foundation of New England at Ryles Jazz Club. In recent years, the ON KEE Boston ensemble performed for the Fundraiser for African American Diabetes Association at Graces by Nia. These engagements highlight ON KEE's belief in the power of music to make a positive impact beyond the stage.
The year 2004 saw ON KEE take part in a significant political event, as they performed at the Democratic Convention in a special tribute to the National Education Association. This performance further showcased their ability to connect with diverse audiences in various settings. October 2005 marked an exciting new chapter for the band with the release of their inaugural CD, aptly titled 'Giving Back.' This musical offering served a dual purpose, not only showcasing their artistic growth but also supporting a worthy cause, with proceeds benefiting the Lupus Foundation in New England. This initial foray into recorded music was met with enthusiasm, paving the way for further creative endeavors. Subsequently, ON KEE has released four additional CDs, each capturing a different facet of their musical journey: 'Live at Mars,' offering a glimpse into their dynamic live performances; 'Positivity,' reflecting their optimistic and uplifting musical spirit; 'ON KEE Live at Ryles,’ a testament to their enduring connection with the esteemed Cambridge venue; and most recently released, ‘Evolution,' signifying their continued growth and exploration within the jazz genre. These albums serve as a testament to their prolific creativity and their dedication to documenting their musical evolution.
Following Lenny McLean's relocation to Maryland, ON KEE seamlessly transitioned their musical activities to the vibrant DC/Maryland region. They actively participated in numerous events, including a Lupus Foundation fundraiser held in Glen Burnie, Maryland, in April 2008, demonstrating their continued commitment to supporting charitable causes. The band also established regular weekly performances at popular local venues such as the Stonefish Grill and Peachez Lounge and Cafe, both located in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, allowing them to maintain a consistent presence and connect with the local music scene.
ON KEE's performances have graced a wide array of venues throughout the Baltimore/Washington metropolitan area, reflecting their broad appeal and versatility. These include notable establishments such as the Maryland Live Casino in Hanover, Maryland, where they bring their sophisticated jazz stylings to a diverse audience. In Virginia, they have performed at the elegant Carlyle Club and The Westin Alexandria Hotel, captivating audiences with their refined sound. Their presence has also been felt in the nation's capital at the Brencore Music Festival, Bowie Center for the Performing Arts. Within Baltimore City, they have entertained patrons of the culturally significant Reginald F. Lewis Art Museum as well as the lively Baltimore Inner Harbor. Further engagements include performances at the popular Lake Arbor Jazz Festival in Mitchellville, Maryland, and the intimate Takoma Station in Washington, D.C. ON KEE has also been a featured act at the Southern Maryland Wine, Jazz, R&B and Funk Festival, showcasing their ability to resonate with diverse musical tastes. On Kee had the honor of performing with the great Nikki Giovanni at the Washington, DC location of Busboys and Poets. The band has also been selected for the Jubilee Homes Music Showcase Sunday Series in Syracuse, NY. In addition to these public performances, ON KEE remains a sought-after ensemble for numerous private engagements, adding a touch of sophisticated musical elegance to weddings, birthday celebrations, and corporate functions.
The distinctive and captivating jazz sound of ON KEE is a direct result of the rich and diverse collaborative efforts of talented musicians hailing from both the vibrant musical hub of Boston, Massachusetts, and the dynamic DC/Maryland area. Following his move to Maryland, Lenny McLean skillfully established a second iteration of the ON KEE Jazz Band, carefully selecting accomplished musicians from the local DC/Maryland region. This strategic move ensured the continuation and evolution of the ON KEE sound while embracing the unique talents of musicians in his new locale.
Since establishing his presence in Maryland, Lenny McLean has fostered collaborations with a wealth of accomplished musicians, a testament to his ability to connect with and inspire talent. Through these ongoing partnerships, he has successfully sustained the enduring legacy of ON KEE with both his original Massachusetts-based ensemble and his thriving Maryland-based group.
Deeply rooted in strong familial values and underpinned by a firm spiritual foundation, ON KEE remains steadfast in its commitment to providing audiences across the Eastern Seaboard and throughout the nation with its distinctive and captivating jazz musical offerings. The band's dedication to their craft and their genuine connection with their audience are hallmarks of their enduring success.
At the heart of ON KEE is the guiding force of Lenny McLean, who serves as the band leader and the accomplished keyboardist. His vision, leadership, and musical talent have been instrumental in shaping the journey and sound of ON KEE from its inception to its continued success today.
